Wacky Hair and Loud Shirt Day!

On Friday the 18th of August our school had a Wacky Hair and Loud Shirt day!  We had this day to support the wonderful work that KidsCan does in New Zealand schools including Leabank School!  Check out some of the 'Wacky hair do's'!

During our sound topic we have been learning how vibrations create sound!  We discussed vibrations and we did an experiment where we made water move by creating a vibration by jumping in our classroom.  The students were able to observe the water moving as the vibration of them jumping went through the floor and into the dish holding the water.

Cross Country Day!

Well the big day arrived this week!  We have been practising for our school cross country day since last term.  Unfortunately, the weather was not the best but we had lots of fun and there were still lots of parents to see the students try their best!

Listening to quiet sounds!

Room 3 discussed quiet and loud sounds that we hear in our school, our homes and our communities.  There were lots of them!  We talked about how hard it was to hear quiet sounds sometimes.  Room 3 did an experiment where we had to try very hard to practise listening to quiet sounds like the ticking of a clock!  We tried using lots of different sizes of tubes to listen!

The NED Show!

This week we had a visit from the NED show!  The NED show is a programme that travels around New Zealand schools promoting positive messages around learning and relationships at school.  The students were very excited to see the programme and became big supporters of what NED stands for!

Big Ears!

Room 3 discussed some different ways that we could make sounds louder.  We wondered if we could hear sound better if our ears were bigger.  We decided to try this idea out by making bigger ears!

Making sound louder!

We started off our sound topic by learning how we can 'amplify' sound, or make it louder.  We made cones where we discovered we could use them to make our voices louder when we spoke into them.  We also found out that we could make the sounds that we hear louder by listening through the cones too!
